More About Dr. Al Carlozzi

Dr. Carlozzi served as a member of the Counseling and Counseling Psychology faculty at Oklahoma State University (OSU) for 40 years, and retired as a Professor in June, 2019. For his last 13 years with OSU, he served as Director of the OSU-Tulsa Counseling Center. Dr. Carlozzi maintained a part-time private psychology practice for 37 years, and his clinical specialties include individual, couples, and family therapy for anxiety, depression, and relationship issues, and affirmative therapy for LGBTQ+ persons. He has numerous presentations and publications to his credit, including his most recent 2019 co-edited publication, Transgender and Gender Diverse Persons: A Handbook for Service Providers, Educators, and Families.

Awards he has received include the OSU Regents Distinguished Teaching Award, OSU-Tulsa Outstanding Teaching Award, Distinguished Researcher Award, and the Leadership and Service Excellence Award. Examples of his strong commitment to service include his many years serving on committees and the board of directors for Mental Health Association Oklahoma and his co-leading the support group for parents of transgender children and teens at the Dennis R. Neill Equality Center. As a tribute to his years of service as Director of the OSU-Tulsa Counseling Center, OSU authorized renaming the center to the Al Carlozzi Center for Counseling at OSU-Tulsa beginning in January of 2020. He received the Nancy McDonald Advocacy in Education Award by Oklahomans for Equality in 2022 in recognition of his years of service and advocacy in support of LGBTQ+ persons.

Since his retirement from OSU in 2019, Dr. Carlozzi continued being active in his private practice, which due to COVID-19 was exclusively a telehealth counseling and consultation service. He discontinued his provision of private counseling services in January of 2022. He continues to serve as a consultant when requested services seem to be a good fit with his expertise and to serve in a volunteer capacity on the Zarrow Mental Health Symposium Planning Committee for Mental Health Association Oklahoma and on the Compassionate Tulsa Committee for the City Of Tulsa. He continues to serve OSU in his capacity as Professor Emeritus by occasionally teaching graduate courses, and he makes presentations upon request on topics well-suited to his knowledge and experience.
